Kendrick has limits to his creative control too.

They leave him to his own devices for his albums. The trade off is that when he's not in album mode.... "Cuz baby now we got bAAd blooood"

He does these bizarre collabos with pop artists that opens doors for him that otherwise wouldn't be there since he doesn't work with them on his albums. If DAMN. sells real well, Anna Wise is gonna turn into Ariana Grande real quick.

Good discussion point by OP. Em is clearly a fan of Hip-Hop so he always had me :gucci: when his music was so fukking wack whenever he didn't use Dre. I'm not denying his lyricism or none of that, because he's undeniably great, but sonically, yeesh, give homie some Premo/Madlib/Pete Rock beats already.

Eminem did have creative control, just not for the lead singles

Also he was signed to Dre who was signed to Interscope, so he was never in the driver seat but they let him do whatever he wanted anyway, except quit because he had a contract.

Kendrick only has to listen to Top Dawg who lets him do whatever he wants

Also the reason why Kendrick, Drake, and Big Sean are even on is because of Kanye West.

Before he blew up, rappers like that would never be mainstream.

Then Lil Wayne became a serious rapper, so that made spitting popular, and now you have this current climate in rap.

  • Em did that, so Kendrick don't have to do that. Besides, you don't really need to CREATE a lane for Kendrick like they did with Em, you just fit him into one. Which is why some people get kinda skeptical about the Pac references even though I'm sure Pac is a ginuine influence on Kendrick, he was on Em too. But Pac was an interscope artist as well, drawing that connection, even if there wasn't one already makes sense.

    Listen to 50

"Em made that company over a billion dollars, and when he ain't around they saying foul shyt about him"

Em kept that label afloat, Kendrick is a sure thing at this point and like I said, he does what he wants and they market the fukk out of it cuz they got the formula. I love K-dot because he's making good with his opportunity, fukk the record label shyt.

He did better than most, most rappers with any potential usually fall off by their second album. After that things start feeling off. People think the sophomore slump is some type of curse when it's just major label influence involved. Only rappers with a actual great discography tend to be independent, I can't even listen to jay or nas maybe outside a couple albums
