How big was the hype for Canibus’s Debut album?

The actual album was terrible but I’m talking about the buzz and hype heading into it. He had a series of great to classic guest verses building buzz and the LL beef which peaked with the only notable song of his career second round knockout. Which was actually a top 30 hit in America.

We thought he was gonna be the next Rakim. He was one of the most hyped upcoming rappers at that time. It wasn't mainstream hype on some Snoop shyt, but within the hiphop community he was heavily anticipated. Then the album dropped and word of mouth spread fast that it was trash and shyt was never the same.

Pras, Canibus and John Forte all dropped dud debut albums in 98. Everyone associated with Clef dropped a dud debut in 98 except for Lauryn.

His hype was as big as DMX and even though 2nd Round Knockout was a good diss track it wasn't a "hit" so that kinda killed his buzz a bit then the shytty album dropped.

Almost 50 Cent level street buzz. Had the whole game shook. People were expecting some life altering shyt from him.

He had a lot of momentum that died with me once I heard Wyclef was producing it.
