This shyt always puzzled me.

Help me understand:why:

A kicked football travels in an non-asymmetrical arc. It starts low, goes up, reaches its apex or highest point, and then goes down. A football that is kicked for 80 yards reaches its highest point more than 40 yards away before it makes its descent. At 80 yards, it has touched the ground. That means the ball is below the lower bar of the uprights and would not count as a field goal. At 70 yards away, the ball would still go 80 yards but it would still cross below the uprights. At 60 yards away, the ball will be very close to going above the uprights. Again, it may go under depending on various conditions. As you know, the uprights are well behind the goal line and within the end zone.
