I feel like people don’t really give him credit for being a precursor to Kendrick, Lupe and even Kanye (both Kanye and Kendrick have even cited him as one of their major influence).

Common was among the first to do the whole introspective and moral conscious rap during the mid 90’s which was a time where a lot of rappers had to change their whole persona and style to a more rugged/gangsta image in order to sell records. Not to mention he held his own against Ice Cube when they were feuding.

He has a Platinum album, a few Gold selling ones, some Billboard hits, a decent acting career, dated a bunch of celebrity women, and his album with Pete Rock last year was praised heavily.

Not everybody is going to blow up and dominate like Jay-Z.

That's not even touching on his affiliation with the likes of Kanye, J Dilla, and the Soulquarians.
