A lot of people don't listen to a conscious rapper long enough to have any criticisms. Me personally, I don't think there's any conscious rappers out there that can hold my attention long enough to really sit down and think about what they're saying. Lupe Fiasco and sad to say Saigon who I thought had potential in the conscious lane, neither have presented any material that I really want to sit down and listen to for extended periods of time.

I can listen to Chuck D and Cube, and Nas all day long, but I can't say the same for other artists doing the conscious lane. Lupe is one of the boringest rappers I've ever heard. I like his ear for production at times, and he's definately a solid wordsmith, but he still bores me.

First of all, Lupe is a bad example. He's as confused a negro as there is in hip hop. Take his positions with a grain of salt.

As far as your underlying question: I dont think anyone has painted "conscious" rappers as being virtuous Jesus clones. A lot of 'em are upfront about their materialistic, hedonistic, substance abuse indulging ways --- its just that their music has depth and balance. "Conscious mcs" are actually aware of the world around them, and can rap about things that exist outside of the club and their own bank account.

Thats music I can "feel", and relate to....not some frontin ass lifestyle of the rich and famous b.s, where niqqas endlessly brag about sht they got, while making me feel like a loser because I dont have lambos and dime hoes.

A lot of MC's rap like the hyper-capitalistic, Jewish record execs that pimp them...not black men. If you're into that cool, but I dont see why you cant understand how that might be a turn off for some. Thats the thing...a lot of ya'll niqqas get wrapped up in someone's lifestyle off the mic, as if its a brand you're investing in. I just care about the music.

True indeed. Thats why so many conscious rappers got killed off a few years ago. Conscious became a dirty word somehow.

You had all the materialistic party rappers and fans making fun of them, calling them boring, broke, smart dumb niccas.

And then you had their actual fans who would box them into such a narrow box, that any song that resembled a fun, lighthearted party joint would elicit cries of sell out.

The ridicule of the conscious MC was one of the biggest reasons for the dip in quality last decade. Those days seem to be over tho, thankfully. Mcs now have varied subject matter --- not every song is some southern, club-oriented, dance tutorial record.
