Nas is the best writer and lyricist in hip-hop history. No one has put words together better than dude, IMO. When Illmatic dropped, no one heard words put together like that before. Q-tip, Pete Rock, Premo, Large Pro talked about Nas like he was a legend before Illmatic even dropped...that's how advanced he was.
