That maybe it but before Prince became really big, Rick James was the man. He speaks on Prince and their competition in this interview. The part about Prince starts at 2:47 mark:

He should get his credit. I don't think people will appreciate his music until they make a movie about his life. Somebody has to make that movie, I'm not sure who can play him besides Chappelle but it has to be made. It would be entertaining and the music will show just how much of a genius he was. The Temptations movie made people appreciate them more.
