The real answer is largely the Industrial Revolution. Europeans industrialized. The one Asian country that industrialized, Japan, became an empire itself.
Ethiopians, though not industrialized, got access to weapons of industrial powers via Russia. Liberia was a US colony conquered by former African American slaves.
