Honest question for fans of the genre. I expect those that have regional inferiority complexes due to a Source article from 1992 are gonna be in here clowning. But for actual fans what led to the loss of the regional sound and why hasn't it been updated?

Slamming the door in other regions faces, gatekeeping way too long and in favor of wack nikkas. Shady label dealings mainly theft of material from unsigned artists. Getting stuck in a time vacuum and loss of creativity. Payola and subsequent dikkriding of other regions. Etc, etc, etc

Drill is from Chicago and I don't know anyone who even cares about Jersey club.
Are you from NY? Do you live here? Nothing about NY drill has anything to do with Chicago drill sonically. Drill music has evolved from songs exclusively about killing into songs about women, partying, etc.

Nobody is listening to Jersey Club MUSIC, but the sound, mainly the drum pattern, has become a staple in NY music today. I’m not talking about Joey Badass and Dave East, but the music we actually listen to here by new artists

This just seems like gripes other regions might have had. How does gatekeeping cause one to lose their sound? Wouldn't that cause them to not be influenced by other sounds?

There are plenty of NYC rappers who are still maintaining the NYC sound. Yes it changed as the next generations came but there have always been rappers that maintained the NYC sound. Joey Badass just dropped a new single today that confirms this. Trap beats pretty much affected all regions including overseas.
