What's up yall. I apologize if this topic has been posted already, but I've been BSing in TLR for most of my time here.

I'm 24 and at a pivotal time in my life. I did the "right" thing and went/graduated college expecting to land that high paying job, but that just left me with student loans and an OK paying job that I don't enjoy. I really have a passion for sports and writing. I have a couple of ideas that I want to pursue in both areas, but I have a couple of questions for all of you who have a successful business and/or nice side hustles.

What is your business? How did you get the ball rolling? How did you get the start-up money to do it, who did you talk to, what kind of connections did you make, the whole nine. All info and previous threads that could help would be greatly appreciated.

figure out what you enjoy and what you're good at and know what you aren't as strong at

figure out costs/ figure out the market/ potential earnings


connect with lawyers, accountants, people in government, people who have a strong ethic who will further your goals

i put flyers in all my neighbors mailboxes and after getting a few clients word of mouth is the best advertisement.

social media and internet marketing can only go so far. actually connecting with neighbors/the community is the only way to truly grow a business in the beginning.

But really, we need more specifics of what you want to do for us to apply our wisdom to your situation. Business isn't one-size-fits-all. Your questions are too vague. I will say that reading books about business (or taking advice about business) like someone recommended can be helpful, but there's only so long you can read about it before you be about it. Most businesses fail. You have to dive in head first, fail like everyone else, and show the world what you're made of by learning and adapting in the face of adversity, while everyone else quits and goes back to the safe route.

Does your business require financing? Then, you'll need to create a business plan. The business plan describes everything about your business, what it is, what you are going to do, who your competitors are, what market research you have done, what you are going to do with the money, how are you going to pay it back, where is your business going to be in 2, 3, 4, 5 years out.
A lot of people have no business plan, just a business idea. They never get financing the first time around. A faulty business plan is a failure waiting to happen. For example, lying about market research. 90% of people have said they would purchase a re-manufactured fleshlight where market research was an informal poll done on the coli. Or, lofty goals with no basis, we expect sales to increase to 1 million in one year based on dreams.
Sometimes, it is good for a bank to decline a loan because they see the business plan for what it is, complete trash. The entrepreneur can take that two ways, 1. ways to improve the business plan, or 2. not listen to opinions and criticism of valid concerns.
