For a couple of years now you can't go by one thread in the IWC about Rusev's character without the mention of being buried by Cena at WM 31.

When Rusev debuted on the main roster he was immediately booked Cold War style. Rusev the Russian sympathizer was destroying all the American challengers put in front of him and in victory would have his Drago from Rocky IV moment when the Russian flag would come down a picture of Putin would be on the screen and the Russian anthem would play. Don't forget Lana was playing the Brigitte Neilson role.
WWE booked his main challengers Jack Swagger, Mark Henry, Big Show up to this point as
'MERICA fukk YEAH!
I'm going to do this for the U.S.A. and they where crushed recieved rematches and lost.
This is when the booking for Rusev at WM 31 is so obvious for those with 20/20 WWE revisionist booking vision not for those who armchair book.
You need the All-American super hero to defeat the undefeated foriegn crusher at the biggest event of the year but Rusev being undefeated isn't enough give the Russian sympathizer the US title.
Enter John Cena.
Cuz 'MERICA fukk YEAH!
Rusev would defeat Cena at Fastlane but that's not the payoff. The payoff is Cena unlike the others who tried to do it for 'MERICA and failed twice would overcome and take the US title and be the first loss for Rusev.
The intros for the match at WM 31 was everything WWE was pushing for the payoff. Rusev had guys dressed and marching like Russian soldiers carrying the Russian flag and Rusev in a Russian tank. Cena had a package of US president's (minus Obama

In the end the babyface American super hero prevailed cuz 'MERICA fukk YEAH!
How did many who've watched wrestling for most of their lives not see this ending coming when it was obvious for months.
