Depends on how complicated this idea is.

You can hire a programmer to code it for you. Or learn to code yourself.

Sounds good but how do I go about ensuring they dont steal the idea for themselves like @Twitter and @LarryLobster ?
i'm not sure. You can probably have a lawyer draw up some type of contract that covers all of that.

But most freelance programmers just want to build their resumes and make cash. i doubt they'll steal your idea.

Once they write the actual code you can get it patented or whatever which will stop them from reselling it.

And the app is only worth money if you're willing to market it right. Most freelance programmers aren't into marketing, if they were they wouldn't be freelancing.

if you really think your idea is worth billions of dollars then you need to put serious cash behind it to protect yourself. Plan out the app, find a reputable programmer, find a reputable lawyer, and get the ball rolling. Ideas mean nothing. Execution is everything.

I've done it and working on #2

Here's what I did:

outlined every page and button on paper so I knew how it "should" work
drew up each individual page
hired a graphic designer to create my drawings into graphic renditions
met with a developer. This is the tricky part. Getting an application built is about 20,000 and you have to maintain it. I honestly had to pay AND give up equity in the "idea" to have it made since I can't code at all. When we first met I had them sign an NDA (non disclosure agreement) and then when we drafted a contract I made them put in a non-compete clause so they couldn't just build a shytty app for me and steal my idea.

Since you can't code for yourself, the whole "beggars can't be choosers" will come into play. Giving up equity and money sucked, but I got my app built and we are working on pushing it very soon.

Start an LLC (for like 200 bucks) and then you can write off most of what you pay. Have your LLC be an "advertising" or "consulting" firm and then hire yourself as a client of the firm. Get receipts.

Good luck breh!

edit: you can find NDAs and Non compete clauses online and copy them and edit them. If it's signed by both parties it's official so it doesn't need to be drafted by a lawyer.

20,000 dollars?

Android app or iPhone breh?

I'd probably go with iphone since I assume they have more users. What you think?
