the way to stop racism is to stop talking about it?
does this same rationale apply to poverty or sexism?
Morgan Freeman is a foolish son of a bytch for spewing this kind of ignorance.
I'm interested in y'alls racial dynamics.I don't know how I feel about Black History Month: we don't have one over here. From what I hear, all they teach is a middle class whitified viewpoint.
But sometimes I think it's better that y'all schools can't run away from teaching black history, because over here in Brazil, we don't have even that. They teach slavery, yeah, but after slavery? No more black history. We don't learn what happened to them afterwards. The better-informed know black people still suffer from a lot of social and economic issues, but we don't learn about the historical process that marginalized them like that.
My white friend said the bolded to me back in 2005 over a beer.
I see this quote two ways.
It's an almost innocent and childlike naivety that allows one to try to make friendships and see people as people and try to enjoy the world.
Or
It's a defense mechanism to avoid reality.
Avoiding reality doesn't help black people. White people have the privelege of not having to concern themselves with race. Not talking about doesn't mean that it's not going to stop it. Infact, this is a hurtful mentality to apply because it basically means giving up any sort of progression for social justice or equality period.
Allowing discrimination and the industry behind it to continue to work against us because we refuse to acknowledge it.
