Question to all the producers here.

How do you determine your BPM for a song.

Do you start with the sample or drum loop

or just pick 80-86 or whatever and develop around that.

It changes each beat. But the common method for me is to lay melody or sample then tap in what I feel

Thanks... i just been doing 82 and i time shifted the sample to fit..

but a few times i have be using the sample bpm as my base

I always use the original sample BPM nowadays... Kinda keepin it like it is cause a lot of times i find the originals almost too good to sample, so i don't pitch shift usually

I use Virtual DJ while making a beat in Maschine so I can throw random acapellas over it to gauge what kind of tempo or pocket would sound best, and then adjust the beat accordingly

i timestretch everything so i make everything at 90bpm. might go up to 95 might go low as 84 i force it to where i want it honestly

thats what i do alot..
i use 82 BPM though.. after i cut my piece put make it 82 or 164 then i timestretch

i feel 82 is the ideal for me... if i need more elements I'll change the timing to 32 or 64

I actually change BPM a lot. I'll make a song that starts slow in my head but will speed it up to hear how it sounds. Sometimes beats that started out fast ended up super slow. I rarely start with the drum beat aswell, mainly because I'm a pianist and not a drummer :russ:. Always start with the chords or melody.

Tap tempo or sometimes I lay down my drums or instrument/sample first then find the tempo of that and build everything around it.

funny... i dont start with drums either... i may make different drum tracks but theres no melody or sample in mind .. it just drums...
ive made a few at 170-180 bpm only to have the beat slow (so in theory its 80-90)..

im had some that i had at 60 but for fun ups it to 160 and would change a few time signatures and its a new drum pattern and sounds just as good
