Long story short, I was browsing the internet to see if there were any websites that have specific metrics or criteria to evaluate NBA coaching.
This interests me because the San Antonio Spurs have moved on from Greg Popovich to Mitch Johnson, and I wanted to know just how good or bad Mitch is...putting aside the common message board ramblings and frustrations over a losing team.

This led me to this reddit post from a few months ago on how fans evaluate NBA coaches:

And the following comment:

I have to say, the vagueness of such comments as "rotations" or "adjustments" is something I find common on social media.

So, coli experts...

On top of that, fans never know the interpersonal dynamics between coaches and certain players, or players and other players in general, nor the off court stuff that’s affecting the on court product. It’s damn near (or literally) impossible to evaluate that and grade a coach while being outside of the locker room.

The average fan knows what a bad NBA HC looks like
-Stubborn...it's obvious a rotation or current gameplan isn't working, why not try something new.
-Seen Thibs call a timeout that ruined the Knicks momentum
-Horrible inbound plays....The Mikal Bridges catch-and-fadeaways didn't work...Thibs tried it 2 more times smh
-Terrible at challenges (wasting them for minimal payoff, and not saving them for pivotal moments of the game)

its like the iceberg theory

the stuff fans talk about like rotations; timeouts, challenges is the visible part that we can see

now, sometimes thats all you need to tell that the coach is not good enough

but the vast majority of what coaches do, we dont see as fans

It’s very difficult as the NBA is so star driven.

I personally gauge how good of a coach is by how well they develop young, unproven/underrated talent. For example, coaches like Jazz era Quinn Snyder and IT era Brad Stevens stood out to me as good coaches as their teams were green and didn’t have MVP level talent , but they were still very formidable teams in the regular season and playoffs.

obviously Rick Carlisle is currently standing out as a guy who gets the most out of players that many people consider mid.

It's hard to really evaluate everybody in the NBA Too many games. But what I look for in general.

But coaches that are down in a game or even lose a game and then you can see the tweaks made in the 2nd half or rematch.
Coaches that have buttons and aren't afraid to push them. Joe Mazzula a shytty coach to me I don't care if he won a chip.
Coaches with plays or systems that I can steal and use for my own team.
Knowing when to call timeouts.
How to talk to officials (Not as important in the NBA honestly.)
