Unfortunately he injected race into it, and in a very corny way as well.
What hasn't helped boys is the set up of the classroom and a very paranoid climate that covers kids in bubble rap. Boys need to be rambunctious and engage in competitive activities (not saying girls don't) - and although video gaming has taken over as the primary outlet to fulfill this need in some cases, boys really need a good balance in school between academics and physical activity. If you have a classroom of over 25 students, all sitting still for a period of time, a teacher won't always be able to pick up on the nuances of every child and their attention levels, and because of the particular needs of boys, they are likely to fall behind.
The author also needed to talk about environment, toxins, diet and a bunch of other factors instead of assuming that black boys can't learn in a particular way. His approach to this was really lazy, and caters to eugenic type arguments smh
