You know when you're listening to a song and try to visualize it and focus on different parts of the track? I love listening to a song, zoning out, and "seeing" it in my mind.

What strategies do you use? What instruments do you put in the foreground? The background? What does the baseline look like, the high hats, etc.?

What.

No one uses strategies, we all just visualize automatically.

different sounds look like different shapes in my head. Color also plays a bit into it but not too much. Its hard to describe in words tho.

This.

And look up Synesthesia.

Synesthesia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is the concept that Pharrell, Kanye, Ross, and Frank Ocean have all mentioned at various points....associating colors with sounds. I feel like I have it to a certain degree. I dont have a link but BBC ran an interesting documentary on it. Some people are just predisposed to having that ability. Is it something you can train? Maybe. Getting :ahh: is definitely a way to "grease the wheels" and start blurring the senses

In the beginning I seperate the bass and the drums. I picture a flat surface without form; with darkness upon it. And the melody of beat moves upon the face of the drums. And the lyrics create light: and then there is light.
And I see the light, that it is good: and I divide the lyrics from the beat.
And I call the lyrics Day, and the beat I call Night. And the lyrics pass over the melody as if it were the first day.
