White writers wanted more comedy and less serious topics. Martin came out with his show and put pressure on them.

One of the only shows of that era that I felt like shined light on normal lower middle class black people. Related to shyt show more than Cosby.

I'm not gonna get fake outraged because FOX's early network days was one of the few outlets where you could actually see multiple sitcoms and shows centered around black characters.

Also, this is why Seinfeld came through and crushed ALL the buildings. Their concept to get rid of all the drama, very special episodes, tear-jerkers, gritty reality, morals, lessons to be learned, and just do 22 straight minutes of comedy was absolutely brilliant. After all, it's a sitcom. Why would I want a comedy to preach to me for 7 or 8 minutes and all I'm left with is like 15 minutes of funny?

They never should have gone live.

There is a reason for directors doing "takes"

It also got too serious after that.

Yep that was the end of the chapter. I remember my wife and I pinpointed the shyt when we was binge watching the series:

  • Going live is a death sentence to sitcoms (this is not the 50s breh)
  • Random characters that did nothing but dragged the show down
  • Changing the intro song (I love the later intro song but GODDDD BLESS THE CHILDDD THAT GOT HIS OWNNNN:blessed:)
  • It got lost in the shuffle of Martin, Living Singles and etc (Blue collar black tv shows were dying out for some wacky Urkel shyt)
It's a shame because Roc was so revolutionary for its time and Charles Dutton deserves his roses for being so unapologetically black, but that is the price to pay in this cac world, being unapologetically black :francis:

The grittiness of Roc was the thing I liked about the show. I didn’t care for Martin’s silly, over the top antics.

Square biz. Roc had a certain cadence to the show. Hell, I used to do the kick in the air thing that Roc used to do when he got his way:mjlol:. I just wish for once that black cinema/tv shows would fall back on tropes, and just be pure like Roc did.

The actors chose to go live because the main cast members were stage actors which is why they don't have a gang of film/tv apperances except dude who played Joey.

I was a kid and it seemed preachy as shyt and every other episode was an after school special
