I'm trying to get into grad school for MPA, and I'm thinking about which concentration I should take up.

I'm thinking that if I can get through the rigorousness of accounting and finance, that I should choose that one, seeing that I'd most certainly be able to land a job.

Only problem is I've never been good at math:beli:

I can learn, though, especially if the math isn't too too hard to grasp.

So what say you accounting/finance people?

Do accounting. For the accounting subject itself, there's not that much math involved...it's mostly algebra. Every school is different for the prereqs though. I had to take some calculus and there was alot of calc in my economics course:sadbron:

But what about finance? Have you taken finance?

Not difficult but tedious, detailed, and fukking boring.

If you're someone who crams and procrastinates, accounting is not for you.

Also, accounting doesn't involve much math at all. It's really just a series of a lot of rules you have to memorize.

accounting is basic arithmetic. It's moreso finding the RELEVANT information in a problem and then solving the problem the way you've been instructed. Finance depends on the teacher you're taking. the intro Finance was easy for me though because I had already been through 300 level accounting classes.

accounting is pretty easy. The school work is not what you need to focus on though.

I went through the recruiting process (they always hire fall current year for the following fall). I got offers, rejections and interviews from small regionals to the big 4.

The firms are all looking for a certain type of person. Yeah they want high GPAs, but they want to see leadership skills/positions, and or work experience (starbucks or whatever).

If you really want to major in accounting, you need to start planning now (get involved in volunteer organizations and try to lead those organizations. If you're a URM (black or hispanic), be a mentor for inner city youths, that will guarantee you a job at ALL of the Big 4.

The firms really pay attention to the career fairs/ networking events, and socials. They want to identify anyone who is quiet or inverted and they want to reject them right away. I'm arrogant, confident, and I am not scared of beautiful women (senior managers at top firms are dime pieces so be ready for that). I am basically always ready for that.

The actual accounting school work is only half of the battle. You have to develop yourself into a Public Accountant, and that is more than crunching numbers.

Also, If you're freshmen, or a junior transfer student, I would start interacting with the recruiters right away. Get your name known. Like I said, a lot of them are smoking hot. I really had to restrain myself around one of them because she was a brick house latina, and I know she had her titties out just to see who would be rude enough of look at them. Everything is a behavioral test! So be alert!

good luck.

To add on to this, get involved in clubs on campus. Being the "Chairman of U of ___ Investment Club" or "VP of Operations for U of ___ Finance Assocation" is the kind of shyt they like to see

It's all relative. If you have someone who is smart, then accounting is not going to be hard. If you got ADD or something like that, accounting might spin your head 360.

I didn't do well in Accounting or Finance classes. I was a business management major. I am good at math too. Accounting and finance is about concepts and rules.

Good luck.
