My mom read to my everyday as baby and toddler. She also taught me addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. She was very active in my school life until middle school, then she worked more and she halted her involvement. My skills now today revolve around writing and reading legal material so my mom's lessons defined my life. However my weakness is math and I needed some time to get back on track after high school. This might be because my mom stopped tutoring me in middle school and I never developed my academic weaknesses. Parental involvement is the most important part of a child's learning and life outcomes.

Heavily involved. Father has PhD and my mother has a college degree. all 4 sins including myself have degrees. I'm very thankful and blessed

My dad still to this day buys me books and sends me articles about interesting things so it goes beyond school you know

My dad worked a lot, if he needed to be there for an issue he would make the time.

My mom was very involved, always.

I'll just say this, if i had a slip come home saying that I missed some HW, I caught the belt. I'm all the better for it. 3 adult kids, 3 bachelor's degrees. One teenager applying to Ivy Leagues.

Long as I wasn't failing they didn't give af.

I plan to be much more involved in my child's education than they were.

it's cool because it's less stressful but then when you apply to college and can't get a full ride to schools of your choice....it really bites you in the ass

Very much so. If they weren't those schools would have messed me and my brother up by holding us back a grade or getting him hooked up on Ritalin. Other than that they helped me with understanding the school work as best they could and with big assignments like school reports/projects and what not.

My mom was all up in PTA and if I got anything less than an A or Excellent conduct she rode my ass and pressed the teachers until it got fixed. Got my ass whooped more than a few times and they wouldn't accept that "my friends parents allow them to get Cs". In retrospect it was the best thing ever and set me up for life and to avoid most of the traps other young BM fall into.

Black parents have to be active, a lot of these teachers and administrators don't give a shyt about us. My counselor tried to convince me not to stress myself out taking "too many" AP classes. When my mom found out they weren't saying the same to those White and Asian kids, she set them straight (in the nice passive/aggressive BW way of course:russ:)
