One of the most innovative artists of all time passes and he can’t even get a cover to a single magazine?!
How is it that no magazine has had Sly Stone on the cover of their magazine since his passing?

Yeah and it dawned on me how WE don’t have our own magazine
Imagine if we had a magazine that catered to Soul/R&B, Rock and Funk for us
Yeah I shouldn’t be surprised by at the same time im like “not a single magazine cover?!”
Sly to me, was the most complete artist of all time. The man could do it all, a prolific writer, an outstanding producer/arranger and amazing bandleader
The brother deserves far more recognition and respect than he’s given.
I don’t think people release how much Sly contributed to music and the influence he left behind

Most "urban" publications cover hip hop primarily and they're run by either non blacks or by blacks so Sly Stone is far from a priority

And that is why it’s important for us to own our own shyt
So that we can uphold our history and legacy
The irony is he should be a priority because it was off of his back and so many other artists hip hop was built off of from sampling.

Magazines are largely dead…even if it was the magazine era, I question whether his passing would’ve made a Vibe/Ebony/Jet cover…maybe Jet cause it was weekly and reached a little deeper in black pop culture…his fame had waned a bit compared to contemporaries

Mainstream media (tv, radio, print) is more or less in many ways a thing of the past.
Communities may be able to set up some kind of funds for murals to be comissioned in an organised way across country.
There is also an issue with musicians dying in their old age, core fans are around the same bracket so theyre more concerned with 3k's colonoscopies than celebrating artistic legacies.
If Taytay* were to disappear in a car accident now, they would paint the ocean with her face. But when she actually goes in 2074, most people wont remember who she was exactly. Life be like that.

Agree but will say that A LOT of Ozzy s attention is due to extracuricular stuff and well... white people are a majority so it makes sense albeit overall unfair

True and I try to factor that in
Sly had been a recluse for decades
Ozzy long after his prime, was on MTV with a reality show and still doing OzzFest
Now Brian’s situation is a bit more to similar to Sly’s
But this is why I feel like as Black people, we gotta have our own magazines and thing to really uphold our legacy and history
I’m glad Sly got to release his book while he was still alive and I’m glad Quest made the doc for Sly while he was still alive too.
