How is it that no space garbage collides with the moon or earth?

I don't know if it was this new strain of loud I just smoked or what, but this thought just occurred to me. :jbhmm:

The earth/moon has existed for millions of years but yet, nothing seems to crash into it. I'm not talking about small space rocks. I'm taking about huge chunks of asteroids or whatever hitting the moon at full speed, and completely destroying it.

Would that be the end of human life if there was no moon? :merchant:

Because the earth has an intense atmosphere that can incinerate anything coming into it

We get hit with meteors all the time but they burn up into pieces from our atmosphere before they hit the earth

And earth has been hit with big ass asteroids but that's every million or so years

Things crash into the Earth all the time (meteorites, asteroids, etc.) it's just that most of it burns up in the atmosphere. And the moon? Have you seen how the moon looks? :dahell:

The debris does but because of our atmosphere pretty much anything that doesn't have a heat shield will be obliterated. Some of it simply orbits Earth in a complete circle. As far as the Moon, we don't leave our 'garbage' around the Moon.

The heat from reentry is very very intense. That white trail you see around spacecrafts on reentry? That's the air becoming so hot it becomes plasma.

The Moon's craters are the result of a lifetime of impacts. There is no atmosphere on the Moon to erode away such landmarks like we have on Earth. That's why we have to deduce a location for an impact crater here on Earth. Many of the craters on the Moon are ancient. The footprints from the Apollo spacecraft missions are expected to be there for millions of years.

Instead of funding stupid wars on earth we should be saving money to prepare to deflect one of those catastrophic asteroids from hitting us directly

Jupiter protects us from incoming asteroids and comets, its so massive and has such a gravitational pull most objects get sucked into it b4 they reach us. We are in what is referred to as the Goldilocks zone.
