Got some extra dough so I figured I'd get my associates degree in boxing and I joined a boxing gym. How can one avoid being concussed and what would you say are the key fundamentals one should have nailed before stepping between them ropes.

Unlike Brazilian jiujitsu one does not simply step into a boxing ring like la dee da due to the serious nature of an art that involves being repeatedly punched in the head.

Any advice would be good

I don't think there's any specific time requirement that will justify being "ready" or not. If you're at a good gym, they may throw you in there but itll always be your choice and it'll never be against anyone head and shoulders above your level. Again, that's if you're in a good gym. If you're in a bad gym you might get tossed in there and end up having to be carried out :mjlol:

And sparring isn't a fight. Guys in good gyms know how to ease up and work on things in the ring.

Honestly if you're just looking to learn how to box, you don't have to spar. It's up to you

The only key thing that's necessary is don't be scared and protect yourself at all times

Depends on your current skills.

I would say if you have decent boxing skills it would probably take a couple months at the most. If you are brand new to boxing, I would say AT LEAST 6 months of fundamental work and conditioning before you even step into a boxing ring.

Then it depends on who they will make you spar with.

And I agree with up top as well... You technically don't need to spar and sparring usually consisted of people going light af. I used sparring really to work on defense when I was a kid. I rarely even threw back, just worked on catching, watch where shots would come from, distance, countering (or moments where I would counter) etc. Mainly just thinking in the ring and getting used to doing that. But I haven't actually sparred in in like 10+ years I think.. not seriously. I don't want/need to

Boxing stamina is different than any other type, and that's the biggest factor. I think @O.T.I.S. is being a bit conservative, I'd say 3 months. But it all depends on your cardio activity prior to entering the gym.

10 years? Is that ordinary or do you have concerns about being CONCUSSED

I'm being conservative but also repeating what my coach told me a couple years ago.

Especially since Ive had multiple leg surgery. Can't do shyt I used to
Doesn't sparring help build your heart though.

Cardio and heart tank are two different things

Boxing in gerneral builds heart. Plenty of cats get in the ring and quit but sparred for this long or that long..

And I'm not a professional boxer I just need to know how to knock a nikka out if I need to and I'm good. I mostly can't spar because of the amount of movement I personally need to fight the way I fought when I was boxing normally.

I'm short.. Got to get in and out of range a lot. Can't do that regularly with pins and rods in your pivot foot

for me it was shrugs (barbell and dumbbell) and this machine below

HammerStrength-4-Way-Neck-L.png
Only seen that machine once in my life, could never find it again

@Mowgli I did wrestling neck rolls. You did BJJ so I assume you know what I mean. Where you kind of get in a bridged headstand (no hands usually) and roll back and forth

I also did the seated neck weight/strap that you probably seen Floyd do in training vids. I still do those
