Most pop hits these days are just sampling or using elements of 80s rock, 90s R&B, or 90s/early 2000s house/techno.

It's a formula that works well because it's nostalgic for older folks who like and it sounds catchy to young kids yet they don't know why. Because they heard those same sounds when they were really young. Like you said, cycles.
