The mixtape + album were the truth, although the album dissapointed slightly. He came with 'fresh' evolution of a style. Was it 100% original, no, but it was dope, he could rap, and had an image that people got onboard with, started a hypebeast wave. He really came out the box as the finished article.

If you created a tape or were halfway through creating a tape as crazy as Live.Love.ASAP, and somehow that tape ended up on my desk, I'd make sure you were signed before anything gets released. That's not a plant. And if you consider that a plant, then everyone who has probably ever rapped is a plant. Which is silly because that's not why we have the terminology 'plant'.

A plant is an unknown entity who gets major features on his/her music outta nowhere, and there's a fake buzz created to pretend like the person is unsigned/independent because that's part of the narrative. Everyone knew Rocky was signed prior to Live.Love.ASAP and he had no major features on Live.Love.ASAP. So how in the hell is he a plant? I know y'all wanna say that outta jealousy (so you don't feel as insecure liking massive actual plants like Drake, Kendrick and J Cole) but his come-up is way more underground than theirs.

No a "plant" is an artist who says he is independent but is really signed - which means virtually every noteworthy rapper is a plant. The narrative at the time was that there was a massive bidding war for Rocky, who is he gonna sign to etc. He already had the Sony deal beforehand. Just as Kendrick was on Interscope before anyone knew, Cole had a deal before anyone knew, etc.

Then the 3mil deal rumors and then "confirmation" came (spoiler: he didn't get 3mil). What followed was a series of missteps. The album came out the gate slow despite having a massive hit in fukking Problems (which used to be Kendrick's record btw). I think it went gold but I don't remember. Each album has been a sales disappointment that doesn't match Rocky's alleged placement in the game. People used to think he'd be Cole/Kendeick tier, now Big Sean is ahead of him....

This is not a criticism. I'm just tired of people pointing to one artist instead of all. BTW I told y'all ages ago Chance was on Interscope lol. I explained the fukkery of development deals. I worked at a label, all your favorite rappers are playing the game and there's nothing wrong with it.

yeah... that was within weeks of Purple Swag being released, which came out months before Live.Love.ASAP.

When Live.Love.ASAP was close to being released, he was already signed. Everyone knew this. The narrative was "who the fukk is this guy who got signed for 3 mil and has almost no music? Just some songs called Purple Swag and Peso?"
