How long you want to bet before much of the Western United States becomes uninhabitable?

I'd put my money on 10-20 years tops before parts of Western US is so arid that it can no longer support life.

The map reading "Stays Wet" made me laugh :takedat:

On a more serious note obviously some of those areas have always been like this and there's probably little appetite or concern for changing it due to the fact that they are so sparsely populated.

But in the future if ppl decide to start moving to these areas (or are essentially forced to as cities and suburbs become too dense), the country will spend whatever it takes to bring the water there. I could see the US going all in on desalinization and just piping the water to farms/population centers.

You're also going to see all of the technology being used in the oil industry transitioned to looking for water.

    Republicans will block it.

They want to take away our guns but send water to those blue states! No way!

Many of those areas are very conservative, as are the industries that will suffer (farming).

Repubs didn't mind when Trump was bankrupting the farmers with his trade war.

Low-key there'd be PLENTY of water in the west if they weren't idiots using it all for cash crops.

Take away some of the nut trees and the cows and we wouldn't even have a water issue. It takes over a million gallons of water to bring a single cow to market and there's a husband-wife team in Cali whose profitable almond farms use more water than every household in LA combined.

Meat’s large water footprint: why raising livestock and poultry for meat is so resource-intensive

Scary, but I made a thread about climate change in TLR, but everyone downplayed it.
