How many more yrs do you think it'll take until video game gfx are indistinguishable from real life?

I don't think we'll reach what you talking about via more powerful hardware. It'll be a technique that puts us there like how HDR changed the game. Ryse in 4k HDR with directional audio isn't available now because of fear of post traumatic syndrome :francis:
Is 4k HDR really that lit?

I got HDTV from 2014 and it's 48 inches.
Still works fine but I be tempted sometimes to upgrade.

This.

It's not possible with the current paradigm.

“Real life” graphics exist already. You just gotta have a super high end card (or 2) and an 8K monitor

Well the human eye sees at about 500 megapixels, and today scientists spent $370 million on a 570 megapixel camera to take pictures of distant galaxies. So it's kinda like the same amount of time it took to turn computers the size of living rooms into pocket sized phones. Except those are just photographic cameras, and not videogame graphics. 20 years at least, maybe 100 depending on how dedicated people are. But I really don't know shyt about technology, so I'm probably misinterpreting things.

People have been asking this question since the late 90s. And every year people say it's just within reach. But it's not.

The highest end CGI currently takes about 24 hours to render ONE FRAME. That's how long it took them to render Snoke for The Last Jedi. So that's 1 month of CPU time spread across 20,000+ Cores (that's a low end estimate for a render farm) for ONE SECOND of movie time. And that's if they render at 24fps where they can save time with motion blur (they usually go higher and convert down).

Snoke wasn't even totally convincing either. It was easy to distinguish him from real life.

Sure people will discover more efficient ways to render textures and push lighting to fool our eyes. But indistinguishable? Nah.

We are at least 20 years out.

Like actual HD content, it really comes down to the source. There isn't a ton of naive 1080p content outside of games. For instance, the dark knight bluray was a big deal because it had scenes shot in HD, mission impossible did it afterwards. The total number of movies to truly take advantage is pathetic. The rest of the movies are basically just upscaled DVD's.

4k today is giving you mostly upscaled bluray's with gaming and only a handful of movies/tv taking advantage of what it really can do. Cable companies max out at 720p and claim we won't have 1080p be the standard until 2030 :whoo: so don't expect 4k to take off outside of gaming for a few years. Like you said, you got a tv 3yrs ago and you're content. I feel the same way, I'll get it eventually but I'm but pressed to get it today just to play halo gears in 4k
