If You Stream a Song Once a Day, When Does It Pay the Same As a Download?

During Congressional testimony on Wednesday, songwriter, producer and recording artist Jimmy Jam offered an interesting comparison between an Amazon MP3 download and a Pandora stream. Using a royalty payout of 1/10th of a penny for a Pandora play, Jam calculated that if a fan listens to the same song once a day, it would take roughly two years for internet radio royalties to equal a download in terms of royalties (full testimony here).

But how does that compare to other formats? Here's a breakdown of how different streaming, radio and download formats compare to a paid download - assuming the song gets played once a day, every day

:noah: .......sheeeeeeeeeit all them plays just to EQUAL a lousy 7 cent royalty download payment!!

So if a 140 folk stream your joint every day for a year that's like getting 1 download per day for a year, on spotify at least.

You figure the biggest records out now are probably streaming up in the six figures per day. *cues windows calculator*

100,000 streams/day = 714 downloads

500,000 streams/day = 3571 downloads

let's figure the average life on a hit song is three months heavy rotation.

500,000 streams/day X 90 days = 321,390 downloads

So based on that math, streaming would have to account for roughly 321,390 lost legal downloads per hit song (conservative estimate) in order for it to hurt the artist.
