Depends on your current standard of living and how long you expect to live.

So if you planned on living till you're 80, and want to live off say 70k per year, you'll need $2.8 million (actually more to account for inflation).

I think I could do it on $5M, if I could be disciplined enough to live off the interest (would hope I could get 3-4% a year in bonds or something else low-risk). No promises, though.
