I'm with one paying the rent and the other paying the utilities/ car/groceries.

With each making$4k/month::

If groceries go up slightly, don't complain.
If the mortgage/ rent go up slightly, don't complain.

Now, if they go up substantially (i.e. ARM loan rate kicks in, hosting Thanksgivings this year) then that's may be something to talk about.
