sometimes its as simple as
taking an ad from a rival dealer to another dealer and telling them to beat that or ur getting the other dealership's car
falling into the trap of talking about what you want your 'payment' to be is another thing to avoid.. when i got my car i already knew the exact amount i was going to be financing which meant i knew exactly what my monthly payments would be. so when they started talking to me about "we can lower ur monthly payment!" i was like stop it right there bro.
i lied to the dealers saying i wanted the rival manufacturer's car instead.. so knowing the alternatives is also good.
i didnt meet the salesman/sales manager til the day i went in to pay for my car. i did it all online over e-mail. i was already preapproved for a loan thru bofa that beat their pathetic interest offers. just went in for the test drive and gave them the check and left. i still have all the e-mails n sht of my back n forths with them. i was even going to walk out of the deal because they were 800$ over my price.
"800$ is nothing man!! its like an extra 39 cents a day for the term of your loan"
me:
"800$ dollars? thats nothing! just cut back on starbucks or soft drinks for a couple months!"
me:
"oh hey just wanted to call u that theres a guy in reno thats willing to buy the car for 1500$ over what we're offering you... let me know if u want to close otherweise the car is his"
me:

oh ok well looks like u just came up on 1500$ then because im not buying the car
"ok we'll sell you the car can you come down tomorrow?"
me:
