What separates a good tackler from a bad one?

Of l don't think it is much of a skill and has more to do with how reckless you are willing to be.

Properly tackling takes skill. The ability to square up, the foot work, watch a runners hips, body positioning, to stay wrapped up, it all takes a lot of skill.

It's the difference between a tackle for a loss, and ending up on your ass

Just launching yourself into someone is reckless and doesn't work most of time albeit funner to watch.

Tackling is work ethic and hustle as well as technique. I've seen too many players just run towards a players and put their arms on them thinking they'll just fall. Also I facepalm every time I see players take horrible angles on a tackle.

Agreed.
Jimbo said after our poor tackling performance vs NCST it has a lot to do with " the want to"

Tackling is definitely a skill. It takes a mindset of recklessness, relentlessness, and talent.

For instance, Sean Taylor & Ed Reed started out as great HITTERS (ST being bigger and more forceful, which knocked a lot of players out) but you can recover from a big hit and keep running. They then become much better tacklers into their careers.

I talked to a guy from the Vikes a few years ago who learned from maybe the best tackling CB of all time, Antonie Winfiled, who basically said he learned to drives through a player full speed before they can make a move, with the mindset that if he missed he would at least clip a guy who would get tackled by others.

I hate the NFL in the fact that these tackling rules and technique in commerical are not taught on the field in real life, its all for show, and discussed by men who never tackled anybody in thier entire life.

Low man goes, tall man falls....

It's all about anticipating, angles and leverage

A combination of a lot of things: strength speed size technique intelligence and want.

I didn't really understand this and didn't really wanted too until I got stiff-armed to hell a couple times....

Open field tackling you're kinda born with that skill. It's hard as hell...you could spot the kid early who knew how to do it.
