It’s a big number and I know it’s over what the average is but 10k from a sudden death, job loss, disaster gives you room to exercise options
I took money from my emergency and put it into the stock market, so I have a measly 2k
. I'm single and young, should be enough.
But it depends on your situation, ideally at least 5 grand, but 3-6 months of living is a good idea.

One year of living expenses. I like to think of it as "supplemental" money. Meaning I could use this money to sustain myself for 12 months but it requires me modifying my lifestyle (ie vacations, dining, shopping).
