manufacturer/promotions/marketing/graphics etc.

If you not owning the production, and ALL you doing as a artist is rapping...As a label owner...tell me why you should receive more than 90 cents per unit....which is actually a lot when it comes to royalties..

This is an old graph and for a band but the similar concept still applies to hip hop music. This is why alot of rappers cake more on indie and touring is the main revenue stream for artist.

Cd era of old was like 13 cents or some wild shyt like that, lolz 90 cents is pretty good. There's some cloudy math out there. Unless folks diversify and have other income streams most go broke due to poor spending habits, no saving, no education.

Happens to everyone. It's why when u hot you gotta go hard. Once that time runs out you ass out and most go broke cuz they can't get booked for shows anywhere. SHows is YOUR main income. Definitely not making pennies on album sales.

I don't like these cats talking about "how shyt is".
Cause most people have completely different contracts, are in different bargaining position, have other investors etc etc.

But mostly, yeah.. Album money is not even that good anymore.
Go platinum and that's like 7 million after taxes and distribution, pressing etc, then the store needs their cut as well.
And then you have the label, who invested mad money for features, marketing, samples, legal consulting, studios, transport, videos, payola, a&r:ing etc.

So even if you have a serious deal, you'll still not miss the cd money too much. Cause if you can move a million, you can make 10 million during the fall.

Cds are essentially just "promotion" for your brand. Then you make the money of endorsements and performances which the cd made possible.

Record contracts are high ass interest loans. They lend you a million to make an album and then charge you an astronomical interest rate on that million. In their defense record companies claim that the supermajority of their artists flop and lose money for the label so a few artists on a label subsidize the rest. Not sure i buy their claims though.

90 cents? I ain't no record company expert, but I heard the average rapper would be lucky to make 20 cent a copy. Maybe that was back in the 90s.

At least Dipset was gettin $8.75 for every album sold in their heyday.
