sup yall

Traveling to Europe soon (amsterdam) and I wanted to know how I can use my money in a foreign country.

I obviously dont want to take cash with me, so how can I use my money?

Can you nowadays use your debit card in a foreign country?

I already asked my bank but they just gave me a complicated technical answer

edit : 10-20-16

I just found out that my bank Wells Fargo charges a 3% fee of your purchase amount

"Wells Fargo assesses an international purchase transaction Fee which is
3% of the transaction amount for each purchase made with your debit card
in a foreign currency that has been converted into a U.S. dollar amount
by a network."

I also found out that they charge $5 for a ATM withdrawal

"The ATM access fee for each international non-Wells Fargo ATM cash
withdrawal is $5.00. Please note that fees charged by the non-Wells
Fargo ATM owner/operator may also apply"

Does this change some of yalls answers?

To me, it seems like it makes more sense to just pay that one time $5 fee by withdrawing money from my account.

The limit for that is $300 which is more then enough for me.

You've never been abroad breh? :patrice:

Any card you have should work in Europe, you might just have extra fees. But yeah check with your bank because depending on cards sometimes you might have a limit, you don't want to end up stuck without access to your bank account.

And you can take cash with you, you're going to Amsterdam not some village in Afghanistan. I always have around a couple hundred euros cash on me when I travel just in case.

Take a credit card and let them know you are traveling abroad. You will need some cash to get around. You can go to a cash exchange at the airport. Also download an app that lets you call and text internationally for free.

Make sure you have internet access on your phone. Its totally worth the pay. Lmao

I lived in 5 European countries and live in one now, been to the US from NYC to SF, traveled to Tokyo and way more other places.

Some of this advice so far is good, most of it is awful.

Here are my tips:

1. Do NOT exchange your money at an airport. The rates are always worse there than at an exchange point in a city.

2. Really good tip is to let your bank know you're traveling. One of my bank cards got swallowed by an ATM when I was traveling.

3. The tip about having some Dollars with you is useless. Unless it is as a back up to exchange them for Euros.

4. Use the website www.xe.com to figure out how many Euros you can get for 1 Dollar. Currently 1 Dollar is worth 0.83 Euro cents.

5. It would be better to pay everything with your card if possible. Check with your bank if there is a transaction fee for paying with your card in stores/restaurants. Also: ask them about the transfer fee for using an ATM. Note that you may not be able to pay everywhere with your US card, but in the majority of places you can, especially if you use a VISA debit or credit card.

6. If you go take money from an ATM get as much as you can if a transaction fee is charged to you, get 500 at once instead of 5x 100.

7. Keep your coins. There is a famous snackbar called FEBO where you can buy burgers, fries etc. using a 'vending machine' like system. Makes no sense now but you'll get it when you are there.

8. Prices in the store in Europe are including tax, not excluding like in certain states in the US. You pay the price you see.

9. It is not allowed to smoke cigarettes in coffee shops in Holland. If you want to smoke IN the coffeeshop it will have to be 100% pure. Dutch weed is way stronger than most of the stuff sold in the US so take it easy if you wish to partake.

Good travels OP!

:laff: Get Whatsapp. Let your credit card or bank company know. That's it. Go to an EDM concert. Turn up for us who lived it in the past.

I live in Germany. Almost everyone in Europe uses what's app because you can text internationally without fees. Just make sure you put the country code in front of the number when you save it and you're good. You can make calls through WiFi too.

Take a couple thousand dollars and put it on a prepaid American Express or Capital One visa card. Dont use your debit card overseas if you dont have to.
I've never thought of this, but will do it next time i travel

do you buy the card in america or in europe?

I've never been but I'd suggest you don't carry much cash on you and keep it separate from your wallet. Gotta be careful out there.
