How you go from SoundCloud to doing shows at SXSW?

I saw a Post Malone interview and he said he released "White Iverson" on SoundCloud, and then a few months later he did 14 shows at SXSW. I mean, I know if you have a strong team around you this is possible, but even still, isn't it too quick of a rise? Is it all about getting a good manager and having him book the shows for you? Just curious from those in the game that may know.

Would it be easier to just approach the same manager of an artist that is in a similar lane than you and see if he can take you on?
