Pretty weird if it was a chute. Usually you have multiple people helping you carry it and I never remember carrying one over my head after drills or practice.

The chutes are all modeled differently, so there's no telling if it looked exactly like that picture without seeing it. My guess would be a group of them were carrying it and the whole thing fell on him, or an entire section at least fell on him. I dont really see how just a "piece" falls off and causes lethal damage
edit: for example in the picture above, imagine #75 without a helmet and one of those other 2 guys up front lose their grip. That's a lot of metal coming down on you.
