When I say Indie rap. I'm not talking Griselda, Rome, etc. I mean more the Armond Hammer, Ka types. I can respect the work they put in lyrically. So I'm not on some "They dusty", that's "White boy rap" tip. But at the same time, alot of these types just lack in other areas. Like riding a beat. I get there are different pockets (i.e. I see it all the time in Detroit rap). But alot of these abstract rappers are more like spoken word artist.

To make a basketball comparsion it would be like saying a 3 point shooter is a great basketball player. Yes, John Paxon could hit 3's and was good at that aspect. But overall, his game was not great. Alot these abstract rappers, are dope lyrically but mid in so many other areas. Am I off target? Are these types rapping in a different pocket and I just don't get it?

It's spoken word in rap form so that's why it sounds that way.

I hear ya. I struggle with this being "rap form" though. There seems to be no interaction with the beat with some of the music I've heard. Lyrically dope? Sure. I respect Ka alot for example. But as Rappers? I can't put them in the elite atmosphere as some of their fans do

The elite jazz players sound unusual to laymen

The most complicated novels or movies don't captivate the masses

High fashion looks weird to most

High end bars are like that. Only the experts even appreciate them. Popular rappers actually dumb down their bars for the masses. JZ. 50. Cam. Common. Elite rappers forgo the simple, more relatable structure and veer off known paths.

Only if you desire to hear words bended to their breaking point will you appreciate real #barz.

Fukc it. I consider myself a rapitty rap rapper.

Billy woods has some of the sharpest lines in the industry.

I cannot agree with you. I listen to rap first for the rapper, beat 2nd.

And billys beats arent even that bad to me, he has a full album produced by the alchemist.

Again, I respect what people like Billy do lyrically. That's not the issue. Yeah, not an issue with them rapping over beats that's not "good". Alc did "Haram" too. So I get that. I'm not on some underground is wack tip. My point is more about their interactions with the beats. Where to me, they put in alot work lyrically. But rapping over beats or finding a certain pocket. I don't think some abstract rappers put in that work in those areas. Doing spoken word and throwing a beat on ain't rapping to me. It's spoken word over a beat.

That could be it. Idk. I think non-traditition is cool like Doom, Pharoah. But they still feel like "rap".
