Funny story.
About five years my mother had a lesion on her hand. Had it checked out at the doc and was told it was a benign melanoma tumor. They "burned" it off with nitrogen. She called my dad to tell him the news. His country ass response? He asked, "How long do you got?", not knowing the difference between benign or malignant. My mom, doc and nurses literally were on the floor laughing.

Not so great story.
I got my first job working at a seafood restaurant @ 15. Every year, the owner paid for the kitchen crew to go deep sea fishing. My friend and I were the only two black guys on the trip of about eight guys. We were cracking up laughing inside with that look when the white guys were putting on sunblock. When we were satisfied with what we caught that day, we moved up top side on the small island and slept on the couches as the boat traveled back to shore.
Well, when we woke up, both of us had severe headaches, nausea and backs, chests and arms that felt like they were on fire. I never knew that the water from a shower could hurt that much. We were peeling for days. I'm talking sections of peeling skin as large as plate in some areas. I'm about Denzel Washington's complexion and my buddy is about a shade or two lighter than Ida Amin.
I'm thinking that the open ocean doesn't have the kind of pollution normally found on land that gives some protection to persons with more melanin. Out in international waters, you get a full dose of the harmful type of ultraviolet rays and that's why we got sunburned.
I never got sunburned while I was in the Navy though. It was probably due to always being clothed and required to wear a hat outside.
