The rule is that couples are usually matched in attractiveness. This means ugly to ugly and beautiful to beautiful. There aren't many anomalies. But, everyone who isn't attractive wants to be the anomaly. Most people who are average to ugly are hoping to luck out with an attractive one. However, when then the number of single, attractive people dwindles to zero, some of us might lower our standards and settle. Lowering our standards dilutes the attractive person you envisioned being with and puts the imagined person more in line with your own reflection of attractiveness. For now, while we still believe we have a fighting chance, we will hold out. That is the truth.
