Because they bucked conventional wisdom. My whole life the consensus was that Tackle was the second most important position on offense and the pay rate reflected that. If you were a bad team you take the LT to protect your guy and then you worry about WR. The Elite LT’s made more than the elite WRs. But the bengals said nah. We believe a game changing WR is more valuable than a Tackle.

It worked out for them tremendously but there’s also been a shift in pay. The elite WR’s now are the second highest paid people on offense, not star left tackles.

And the reason Left Tackles were/are so highly valued is because of one man: Lawrence Taylor.

You all ought to remember that when you make the silly argument that somehow Tom Brady is the best football player of all time.

Lawrence Taylor changed the landscape of the NFL for decades after.

Keyshawn was drafted number 1 over Ogden in 96. Calvin went right before Joe Thomas in 07.

The Lions been in the playoffs the last 2 years and the Bengals have not. Before "bu...bu...but his defense" was the Burrow plea it was "bu...bu...but protection"

Sewell isn't even an LT, he's an RT. Once DCs realized they could just put their best pass rushers on the opposite side from a dominant LT it raised the value of all OL positions. Sewell was the first truly major non-LT OL investment in this era. Now talents like Alt are getting drafted for RT and non-LTs are getting massive contracts. That is the "watershed moment" in all of this.

Which team made a Super Bowl though?

Plus its by need. At the time the Bengals needed Chase.

Bengals. They lost so they still gonna need "what you done lately" success.

If you have a superstar QB is WR really a greater need that protection? I feel like an elite guy would be more dangerous with consistent time moreso than a top WR target. What do you think?

Your point is dumb though. Getting Sewell would not have changed much for the Bengals.

Burrow needs elite receivers. He's great, but he needs them more than an elite tackle. Ideally he'd have both, but he doesnt have the crazy rocket arm like Allen or Mahomes so he needs a receiver like Chase to help him

The last 5 years, who has been more successful since both guys were drafted? The Lions missed the playoffs twice. Bengals missed it twice.

Lions made 1 NFC title game. Bengals made 1 AFC title game and a Super Bowl.

Why? Why is this necessary? Why even engage if this is what you on. I know this place is full of people that operate like that. I can understand you thinking I am one but I am not. If you want to discuss things in a thoughtful, respectful way we can.

Even with their arm talent weapons are still necessary, you can't try and copy KC. Mahomes has a legendary HC/playcaller and a legendary DC so the Chiefs could survive that Kelce and warm bodies approach (and they understood it's not sustainable and continued to invest at WR). Buffalo tried that "open man offense" for a month last season, got smacked in the mouth by HOU/BAL and immediately traded for Amari.

It's a weapons league now more than ever no matter how great a QB you are, people thought Brady was cooked his last year in New England and he went to Tampa and cranked out more MVP caliber seasons. He knew where the game had shifted.
