How many people, outside of the media, have you heard bring up Pearl Harbor on December 7th? Or the Kennedy assassination on November 22? Or the Oklahoma City Bombing on April 15th? Or Columbine on April 20th? 9/11 will eventually become just like that someday. A lot of the people who are out in the world weren't even alive when 9/11 took place. It's not as big of a deal to that generation.
EDIT - You may get some mention of the Kennedy assassination this year since it's the 60th anniversary of that event.
