I think it’s a combination of both. They’re often raised by Christian fanatics. Their environment is an echo chamber for anti-gay sentiments. Though not a like for like example, think of the stereotypes attributed to frequent and devout female church goers or the daughters of pastors. Sexually repressive environments correlate high with maladaptive or compulsive sexual behaviors, be it hypersexuality or sex addiction. At the same time it is still just a contributing factor among many others.

I think another thing is the white man’s obsession with fitting into the macho archetype. They love highlighting what constitutes being a man from what isn’t a man. It’s cultural. They’re very big on dominance displays, connecting with their “warrior” past, romanticizing imperial conquest, superhero comics, giant trucks on giant wheels, bodybuilding as means to compensate for their deficits etc. Everything is a pissing contest on who’s the manliest of them all. So when they don’t fit that mold, you get this behavior.​
