forreal this is probably currenc&y's best album or mixtape imo, pilot talk 1&2 are up there as well as some others.
and this was in my top 5 for the year it came out, but i just now got why he called it that, and especially the album cover confused me.
A Covert Coup is basically what Curren$y did and was doing at the time.
Covert because he built up his fanbase up almost entirely online, and is one of the people who really paved the way for how to do it. He also didn't get much mainstream recognition at the time even though he was popular.
Coup because he was apart of the whole change of the power structure of the rap game, and was making big moves in his own unique way.
You no longer needed to get on the radio or do what others said to get a buzz and make money, he did it his own way. He's been on the radio since then, but i think now were really seeing that whole power shift more and more.
I especially didn't get the cover, because i didn't see how smoking weed and getting money related to the end of communism but now it makes sense.
the taking down of Stalin's statue symbolized the end of communism, which also symbolized (or was supposed to) the end of a few men having all the power and telling people to do things "my way or the highway"
Curren$y got his success his way, so this was a symbol to the end of communism or just the labels only wanting to do thing one way.
respect to Curren$y for being more cold blooded then i ever thought
