I am under the assumption that game scores are a pay for play business...

You pay a company off or give them something and you get a high score...

You don't and you get a low score...

Or you have such a great track record like Rockstar or Bethesda you get a high score no matter what...

Official magazines, they get sponsored by said companies. Unofficial (if you can find any left) really give no fukks, and aren't paid to say any one game is good just because its "new". If you're old enough to remember, PSM(Playstation Magazine) was an independently published magazine, which meant they weren't getting paid by Sony to suck on the brand new game cock. Which also meant they bodied reviews without any care in the world.

Metacritic, RT and many others while not directly sponsored or payed by anyone, are full of aggregating sons of whores.

I assume the "unofficial" reviewers do the same thing...so they can get in a company good graces...and maybe get something...

Like random youtubers who review games and give the games a positive review and the next thing you know the next game that comes out they got an early copy of the game so they can give it a "review"...which is almost always good...

i think most journalists have genres that they play well and specialize in. you just have to find the journalists specialty and follow them for that genre.

this guy clearly doesn't play FPS but maybe that's what they wanted because you get a noob's perspective about the game. another thing is, good and insightful writing is hard to come by in the gaming/entertainment industry so whenever i come across a good writer, i follow him/her even if they suck at video games. at least i know they'll give me a good article and feedback on the game.
