Been like that for a while.
No broke boys allowed 
Only time I've ever been first or business class is because my wife got us upgraded. She travels for work a few times a month so she racks up miles and status. But buying them outright is for folks living a different kind of life.

A formerman at an old job I worked at mention his nephew went to a wedding in Monaco
never heard of the place and I looked it up and it said the average housing price was around 400k and you need to be making a minimum of 250k a year to move there.
First class international really exists to make people consider bussiness class as a bargain. While it really isnt. Its like how gas stations have super premium gas that nobody buys in order to make normal high octane gasoline look competitive.
But most airlines are bushing the first class offerings in favor of a most bussiness class flight orientation. The only outliers are the arab carriers and singapore that are doubling down on making little apartments in the sky for your 12 hour flight .
But if you are okay with a little rude service, and moderate language barriers airchina and cathay pacific are still competitive for the first class market.
Flew it a couple times when I had a friend who worked for a airline hooked me up
