I love debating music, but when someone brings up "album sales" to defend artist/album quality...

Sales matter. Music quality is subjective; therefore, the more people who purchase a piece of music means the product is better than the lesser purchased product.

This doesn't make sense.

In this case, Eminem has the best music out.

And...we know he doesn't.

But the fact that we can argue about "how good" his music is, is the point.

There isn't supposed to be an objective answer to that. By using "sales" you're just trying to use the band wagon instead of having to actually reason out why you support an artist's view on the artform.

The sales argument is for lazy people who are don't like formulating nuanced arguments about taste.

Nice try.

Read what you just said again. :snoop:
I'm not saying it matters. But what objective metrics can we use in music debates? Obviously music is a subjective topic open to interpretation, but sales are the only real ammo stans have. :manny:

Sales can't be used because you're talking about the quality of music.

All music is for sale.

So even if 1 million people like an album, what does that say about what the album sounds like? Otherwise, you should just admit that you like it because everyone else does.

He makes a point tho...it really is the only objective barometer to judge the strength of an artist's career and impact of their music....quality is subjective, granted you cant have a music debate without bias...taking it to the "impact", "relevance" route is the route that contains the least bias in debate :manny:

Music is too objective to debate rationally because everyone listens to music for different reasons hence the need to bring up Sales here & there...

A dude will say Drake is trash because he's not Drake's intended audience but Drake sold 2 Million Records to his intended audience...

We're the culture/genre that bootlegs the most shyt. So an album that might appeal to a core base might not even have the sales to reflect that.
