I find myself listening to soul, funk, old school R&B and even pop

When I listen to soul music I feel like I'm nourished, it's genuine. It's positive

When I hear funk . . it's fun - even disco which is a watered down funk

When I heard R&B it's real . . even pop which is a watered down version of R&B (thematically)

There's something about the genius in simplicity you find in pop music, the universality of each phrase that comprises the lyrics

It touches your soul

. . in hip-hop today I see a race to the bottom as far as morals and intelligence goes. Even a lot of the classic music I grew up to, when you separate it from the entertainment value - the content isn't nourishing to my subconscious, which goes into your well-being

Music I so greatly regarded growing up . . "Gap teeth in your mouth so my dikk's got to fit" . . how can I ride around listening to that as a grown man?

My pure admiration for Dr. Dre that has led to my impartial criticisms for him productivity and status - how can he be proud of his work in music when he sampled a bunch of great music, and surely introduced the sounds to a new generation but really had nothing of substance to add over these songs. If you're not going to improve upon what you're sampling, why do it? His contribution to music has literally been replaying stuff, without that there's really nothing to make note of

Then there's Mac Dre . . I love his work but I've found that most of his fans are literally lacking on an intellectual level. Themes like "Get Stupid" . . why did it surprise me that he ACTUALLY attracted a stupid fan base . . a fan base that is consciously championing ignorance

The intricacy of lyrically inclined rappers is usually a substitute for lackluster songwriting

The pseudo-positive stuff from rappers like Common . . and underground rappers, it all sounds so contrived. I'm not convinced and I feel like they're preaching to me

I'm just not into it anymore. I'll check for it and when the right songs come along I'll nod my head to them but they won't make their way in my playlists

Anyone feel like this?

opposites happening for me. grew up on the soul, funk, pop stuff from the 70s, 80s n 90s that my parents grew up on cus they bumped it all the time when i was younger and as i get older im just listening to more n more rap.

Rap is just lyrically untouchable to me, other genres cant really touch it

But dont get me wrong, i rock with other genres. Just Rap is undeniable

Just listen to the Wu-Tang Clan

Could you imagine if some pop songwriter who was noticeably inspired by Paul McCartney's work was asked about his stylistic similarity and said "well he isn't writing music like this anymore" or if Michael Jackson was still alive and new R&B artist was asked about dancing . . .and he was like "He isn't dancing like this anymore"

and you saw a video from Michael Jackson made a video like

@Wally Russell the question really is: what do you want from your music that hip hop as a genre can't give you?

It's an interesting thread you've made. I'm almost 32. I'm a way bigger hip hop fan now than I was when I was 14 (and even then I was a big fan). On one hand, I always lament about how incredibly juvenile hip hop is. And I really wonder if I'm too old to be listening to hip hop with the intensity I do. But then again, hip hop at its best reaches poetic heights I've not found in any other genre, especially lyrically. Most importantly, I would be a totally different person if I didn't listen to hip hop.

I need raw, funky music. And there's nothing rawer and funkier than hip hop. EVER. Once a new genre comes along that's rawer, funkier and more poetic, I'll probably roll with that over hip hop. Till then, it's hip hop.

Like this is one of my favorite songs ever:

I'm well aware that it's a Herbie Hancock sample. and Hancock is a genius in his own right. But ask me to listen to the original Herbie Hancock record and it's like :russell:

I'm curious: do you mind telling us the soul/pop/RnB shyt that's really doing it for you these days more than hip hop? Old or new

OP

I feel you 100%

Hip hop has been dead for a while. I've had to branch out into other genres.

Growing up, I was so obsessed with rap that I really didn't listen to anything else.

I rediscovered soul, R&B, 80s pop (:wow:) over the last few years.

I literally wait for my fav artists from back in the day to drop. Jay Z, Nas etc

Drake, J Cole really don't do much for me :yeshrug:

The only exception is Young Thug. Absolutely love what he's been putting out. The content is dumb as well but he's so musically inclined that I can't ignore it.

Michael Jackson is no Ghostface Killah.

One's a legend and the other is Michael Jackson.

Michael Jackson don't know the tour dates like GFK does

Given this thread, I'm gonna try and listen to no hip hop for the entire day. Let me see how far I make it.

I feel the same way. I find myself listening to house (deep house and tech house especially) and techno. And if i do listen to hip hop its now mostly older stuff and instrumentals (especially 90s hip hop instrumentals with downtempo balearic lounge stuff). Hip hop is not mentally or spiritually enriching to me.

I guess im just getting old and more settled in my ways now. Hip hop will always be an essential part of who i am but now i just dont feel it the same way i used to.

Right now this joint is giving me some life.

Come to think of it, I can listen to pretty much any genre if the song's relaxing. But if I wanna get hype, it's gotta be hip hop and only hip hop.

Some hip hop's also great to relax to. Hence it wins in both categories.

On a serious note, there's some hip-hop that just transcends the genre because it's a beautiful piece of work. Also in your case if it's a matter of outgrowing the genre, listen to those acts that don't resort to all the shyt that you despise. Listen to KRS or Public Enemy or Tribe or whoever idk.

Hiphop is unique, even today. I am close to 40 yrs old been a head my whole life.

Plenty mature hiphop out there to bump, you just might have to go looking for stuff that fits your current sensibilities.

I am of the mind set that "They" want you to abandon hiphop as you get older, this is how you water it down and infiltrate it, no elders to pass on wisdom. Possible you are made to feel this way on purpose.
