Ilja was the only top guy he had wrestled in a singles match and that was literally the night he and Melo were broken up. He was a henchman, Melo wins the NXT Championship and they both become faces, then he started rising, then they break up as Melo turns on him and Trick is on top as the face. As a heel he never wrestled anywhere near the top of the card
It writes itself, he beats Hendry and wins the title, stays in TNA with the title and make appearances on the main roster with it as a “free agent” and defend it against a couple of mid carders. Tease a unification against Cena to turn the whole TNA locker room against him and then have him drop the title with the whole locker room running in at Slammiversary July 20, and then call him up after Summerslam.
