So here’s my issue. I’m currently employed in the O&G industry, I make a good living, for the sake of reference let’s go with 145 a yr. However my job keeps me away from home at least half the year. It’s a rotational schedule. It’s been that way for ten years and frankly I’m tired of the schedule and want to be at home everyday. There jobs in my industry are few and far between where I live. It’s either A move to where I work
or B make career change.( IT related, leaning toward cloud computing.

A would seem like a no brainer, but my family situation makes it a much more difficult situation

B is on the table, however I’m fully aware I would be taking a huge pay cut. Starting from the bottom in a new career.

So here are the moves I’ve made so far

Enrolled in a associate degree program in cloud computing ( online based)starting this summer.

Began a intro level cyber security course on FedVTE, it’s a DHS affiliate that offers free training to government contractors, veterans and service members

I’ve also started to dip my toe into coding, all Python related.

Is this the right IT field to get into?
What classes or certs should I be looking to add once I get my first certification?

Is it realistic to think I can gain experience by working remotely?

Few question: Over or under 30? Where do you live? Is you current job physical work? Do you have previous IT training? Did you save?

I think you answered your own question.

Once you get your shyt in order the money is just numbers, and those numbers aren't worth your family.
Is the “shyt” I’m trying to get in order a good path to start out on?

I guess a better way to pose this is by asking, this assuming you’ve been in the IT game for a minute, if you could change how you started your IT career what would you do differently? What certs would get, what kind of roles would you have pursued?

The pay cut might not have to be as big as you fear - combined with your previous experience, you could still be looking at very solid money (and you said you saved).

This caught my eye cause you mentioned Python - I work in data science, which could be lucrative for you with the right companies (https://www.thecoli.com/threads/bi-...nd-careers-official-discussion-thread.735663/)

Can't put a value on your family breh. I got a close homie who's worked in and out of a few O&G companies in Europe; we're the same age (over 30) but I got a wife and kid, he's got a baby momma and his child don't live with him. Majority of the O&G jobs ain't for the family folks, IMO.

I would say look at 5 different career paths that may interest you.

Reason being is I don't know how the job market will be for you. The end game is always "Will I find a job?".
Then after that will you even like the job?

You should keep your options open until you have a reasonable transition insight. Don't lock into one path right now. That's my advice.

The only time you should be making a career change over 30 is If you opening your business.
But a complete career change and you have a family is bad move.

Its okay to move laterally and even a step back to go 3 forward, but your talking complete career change.

This should be discussed with your family.
